Text to give

Unicef, Amnesty International, and Starlight Star Bright are participating in a new text to give program run by paypal.

Also, apparently “Charities may receive $50 in matching donations from PayPal from now to June 30, 2008. Use the ‘Donate’ button.” I’m not sure how it works though, but I presume its automatic when you donate to a charity from now until June 30th.

  1. Charity is good. But I hate this recent lazy-ass trend of doing the right thing while doing the wrong thing. Like the Gap Red campaign… what a bunch of consumerist bullshit. Lift your phone to uplift the world? Please. Change the way you live to uplift the world, how about that.

It might be better than nothing. Or it might be making people feel like they are helping more than they are, and alleviating that sense of urgency that we all need to be feeling.

  2. Fair enough. I guess they’re just trying to make it as easy as possible for people to do at least one right thing, even if they’re not doing everything possible. I don’t think people should stop there–but maybe it’ll catch some people who wouldn’t otherwise donate.

  3. Yeah I agree. I just worry that it appeases the guilt that most people feel pulsing down beneath their everyday concerns without creating any sustainable change.
