Let’s play the half assed apology game

Spain’s Basketball Federation has published a good luck advertisement featuring the men’s team pulling at the sides of their eyes: Spain basketball team pictured in controversial pose. You know, the international gesture for ching chong. Yes. We know it well. That’s racist! (Angry Asian Man)

Show me: I have Asian Friends

“I want to say that we have a great respect for the Orient and their peoples. Some of my best friends in Toronto are of Chinese origin,” Calderon, who plays for Canada’s NBA Toronto Raptors team, said in a message posted on his website (www.josemauelcalderon.com).

Spanish newspapers also rejected suggestions that the pictures were racist, saying the team had donated money to charities helping the poor in Africa.

Oh well, thank goodness. You can’t be racist if you’re nice to Africans–good call.

  1. “great respect for the Orient”

Well hot damn, they sold me there! Clearly not racist.

  2. You’ve got to be kidding me…. yeah, I’ve met a couple of Chinese-Canadians, so I can’t be a racist.

Ugh. I wonder if Calderon and his teammates would prefer the terms ‘bigoted asshole’ – or ‘nausea-inducing douche’?

  3. He also said that he thought that this might be a fun thing to do. Nice to know that making racist gestures is all good fun in our post racial world.

  4. It apparently never occured to them that they look very stupid doing that, and that it is making a statement that people from “The Orient” look stupid.

  5. Hot damn! It’s the I HAVE MINORITY FRIENDS card, preferred by self proclaimed not-racists everywhere!

    Orient? Orient? omfg.

  6. You stay classy Spanish men’s basketball team.

    Goddamn that’s infuriatingly ignorant.
