President Obama yesterday lifted a ban on U.S. funding for international health groups that perform abortions, promote legalizing the procedure or provide counseling about terminating pregnancies. Obama issued a memorandum rescinding the Mexico City Policy, also known as the “global gag rule,” which President Ronald Reagan originally instituted in 1984, President Bill Clinton reversed in 1993 and President George W. Bush revived in 2001. (Washington Post)
As in the U.S international clinics that perform/advise about abortions also perform a number of additional services, all of which would be lost if they had the nerve to inform patients about their medical options. I say let medical doctors along with their patients make medical decisions, not religious or political rhetoric. US dollars still won’t fund abortion, but clinics will be able to give honest medical advice without fear of losing their funding.
Let’s hope the HHS regulation is next.
